If there is one tip you should know about parking, it's this: Park in the East Campus lots! Parking there is usually plentiful. And if you leave your car on campus for long periods of time, keeping it in one of these lots will help relieve congestion for everyone else.
Anyhoo...
This web app was designed as a student project by Ariel Lepor to address the tough conditions for undergraduate student parking on the UCSD campus.
Report parking, reduce carbon! Not only does congested parking waste time and gas for the thousands of commuter students who park on campus every day, but an average of 10 additional students searching for parking at a given time means there are an extra 120 tons of carbon dioxide dumped into the atmosphere each year (for 200 days/yr and 9 hrs/day, based on data from EPA estimates).
(Learn more about this project at the documentation website!)
It's goals are to facilitate informing students of where there might be the best available parking by displaying historic parking data, to get students involved by allowing crowd-sourced sharing of parking conditions in student lots around campus, and to encourage usage of the under-utilized student parking outside of the Main Campus, mainly the parking on East Campus.
For official parking information and to get parking permits, visit UCSD Campus Services.
The information on this site is based on crowdsourced data, as well as on historic parking data from the UCSD Parking and Transportation department from Fall. (You can find the original data here.) Historic data will be updated for summer parking conditions. Parking data may be different than displayed during Finals week or other special events. Parking information is available from 8am to 5pm Monday through Thursday.
Love parking? Have an Android device? Check out Triton Park, a UCSD parking simulator game that uses the same historical parking data as this app.
